People of Florida need simple things. A house to call home. Safe neighborhood. Pleasant weather. Clean air and water. Good schools. Affordable healthcare. Low property taxes. The absence of one will not cause a great stir. Two or three will raise concerns. More than that causes people moving out of Florida. Something is rotten in the Sunny State, and it’s not only the swamps.
The Wildlife
The whole point of wildlife is that it lives in the wild, but Florida is ever-expanding into its territory, claiming wilderness for itself. Bears and alligators keep returning to their old feeding grounds or look for a new place to live, as almost everybody in the country. Also, it shouldn’t surprise any to find a pair of crocs in their pool, and we’re not speaking about the shoes. Wildlife in Florida is losing natural habitat due to the expansion of the cities. Predators have no other options but to look for the prey in their old territories.
Warm and humid weather and abundance of food are very attractive to cockroaches. The size of some specimens would surprise you. As a resident, you’d need to make sure your home stays free of pests. As soon as one moves into a new house, it would be highly recommended to sign up with a pest control company. That doesn’t help with mosquitoes, though, which are present all year long. Nor it helps with exotic snakes and lizards people used to keep as pets. And have graciously let them go into the swamps when they grew too big. How humane is that!
The Climate
Sunny weather and sandy beaches – what’s there not to like? Except for the weather that is too hot and humid at the same time. While you can still function when the day is too warm, high humidity on a hot day makes breathing rather strenuous. Not to mention that you start sweating the moment you step outside.
Moreover, Florida’s geographic position makes it a home for hurricanes and tornadoes. Even though tornadoes are more frequent in FL than in the Midwest, they are not as devastating. However, once these disasters pass, they still leave a trail of destruction behind. It would be logical that insurance companies cover you in the case of flooding, but do they? Damage to infrastructure goes hand in hand with hurricanes. Nowadays, we’re over-dependant on electricity. To get a better picture of the hurricane aftermath in Florida, try to live without electricity for a few days now and then. Storms are also responsible for the destruction of the beaches. Hurricanes are not responsible for damage to housing and infrastructure but also for the erosion of the soil. Sandy beaches erode easily and quickly and it is expensive to replace the sand.
A curious geologic happening, that is not related to climate though, are sinkholes. The ground caves in when too much water is extracted from the underground. Pressure on the Florida Aquifer is big due to the rise in population, and it would eventually lead either to water import or restrictions. At present, it is a cause of many new sinkholes.
The Traffic
Florida heavily relies on tourism so it doesn’t surprise that about 100 million tourists per year considerably contribute to congestions on the roads. But traffic jams are not the biggest issue. The one that would cause people moving out of Florida is traffic accidents. Roads are not pedestrian-friendly at all and, if that is not enough, drivers usually don’t have a driving license. However, getting through the traffic on the way out may take quite a lot of time.
The Neighbors
A careful, educated voting choice sets a course for the whole country for a considerable period and is not something to be ignored. Similarly, people who chose to leave Florida failed to ignore neighbors that made some very poor choices in that regard. Moreover, those same neighbors are endangering others more acutely, accepting and encouraging some very bad gun policies.
High crime rates across Florida make fertile ground for bad gun-policies only leading to even more crime.
High crime rates cause many to resolve to keep weapons at home for personal protection. What doesn’t seem necessary are gun-ranges where children can shoot. And kill someone when they lose control over an automatic weapon. A person doesn’t even have to be a target of a criminal that attempts burglary at broad daylight to get shot. Or be a part of the road-rage shooting. It is enough to sit in a backyard and catch a stray bullet a neighbor shot in the air. Aside from celebrations and regular target practice, there are many opportunities for the trigger-happy. Finally, what a person can do to improve safety there? Not much, it seems. Except moving out of Florida.
The Alternative(s)
There aren’t many if there are any. Florida has always been a synonym for a place where you’d go for rest and fun. Especially if you wish to retire in a warm and sunny climate. Tired of the struggle? Constant strife wears you down? Do you wish to slow down a bit, take it easy? In case you think about giving FL a chance, think again. Follow some YT channels made by locals, talk to Floridians, and then do your homework. People moving out of Florida are the best source of information. Finding out what drives people out after you move there will be costly. Meanwhile, researching the remaining 49 states costs nothing.
