Password Managers a Must for Travelers

Password Managers a Must for Travelers

It’s as though everything needs a password these days as companies become more paranoid about data protection, and those looking to farm said data, make consumers jump through hoops to access their own accounts and information. The worst thing you can do is write these passwords down, especially when traveling, so why not use one of these handy password managers? This will mean that you never have to worry about your little address book of passwords going missing.

What is a Password Management App?

Whether it’s your bank account, holiday insurance or even your poker app, password protection is your responsibility, but with so many to remember, and most apps recommending that you change yours regularly, keeping track of passwords can be impossible. That’s where a password manager comes to the fore. The manager collates all your separate passwords into one secure location and creates a unique and more secure master password for you to produce each time you log-in. New accounts are allotted their own unique secure password, but you only ever need to remember your master password. Other advantages include added encryption, meaning higher levels of security, as well as the fact that the manager will work across multiple devices and browsers. All this sets password managers apart from less secure browser-based password management systems you might already be using on Chrome or Firefox.

Dashlane

As is the case with many password managers, Dashlane has both a basic free version and a premium version that you pay a monthly subscription for. The free version is a perfectly functional manager, allowing you to safely store all your passwords on one device. However, when you’re backpacking or camping it may be worth splashing out for a premium account, which allows you to save unlimited passwords across unlimited devices. It will even store other sensitive information connected to your accounts to save you time, and for the security-obsessed, it has the capability to send you alerts in the case that your data has been leaked onto the dark web! Of course, all this added security comes at a price, so keep that in mind when you select your chosen manager.

LastPass

LastPass has both an excellent free version and premium version, which slightly undercuts some of its main competitors. Other than its brilliant user friendly interface, LastPass also has a couple of standout features that set it apart from the competition: giving you the ability to log on to your mobile apps, and an extra level of security involving a fingerprint scan which gives enhanced protection against those pesky phishers.

This manager is particularly handy for families with data protection needs, allowing each member to control their passwords seamlessly and to even converse via a private encrypted messaging service, for people who no longer trust the likes of WhatsApp or Messenger. If your family has hidden secrets the neighbors should never know, then this is the app for you and yours.

The fact it is open source means glitches are easily fixed by those in the KeePass community. Although at first glance this password manager isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing, you shouldn’t let that put you off, because by and large KeePass has all the features and capabilities you would need or expect from a manager.
