You can’t go to Jamaica and not experience jerk. A style of cooking native to Jamaica, meats are dry-rubbed or marinated in jerk spice then slow-cooled over burning coals or green pimento wood.
Scotchies Jerk Centre is a Jamaican institution, with locations in Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Kingston. Their jerk is legendary, with meats grilled over pimento wood logs and served with delicious sides such as rice and peas, bammy, breadfruit, and festival.
Throughout Jamaica you’ll find roadside stalls serving up this local delicacy, a lip-smacking must try. Of course, you’ll also find this delicious dish on menus across fine-dining establishments and at many of Jamaica’s luxury villas, where innovative chefs will put a modern spin on this quintessential Jamaican dish.
Visit reggae legends in Kingston
Jamaica’s capital city is often bypassed by visitors, put-off by its high level of crime. But, stick to its attractions and avoid poor inner-city areas at night and there is no need to scratch this vibrant city off a Jamaica yacht charter itinerary.
The city is the birthplace of reggae, with music lovers heading to the iconic Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road. The museum is located in what was Marely’s house and was declared a protected National Heritage Site in 2001. Areas of interest include bullets from the failed assassination attempts, Marley’s compact kitchen, along with his favourite items of clothing.
For those looking for a true Marley experience head to the Trench Town Culture Yard, where Marley spent his teenage years and penned his first songs, motivated by his impoverished surroundings and Jamaica’s changing political landscape. Located in the heart of Trench Town, enjoy a tour with the resident Rastas, view the tiny room where Marley lived before he found fame, and see his first ever guitar.
Other Kingston highlights include the spectacular Devon House, a stunning luxury villa in Jamaica built by the country’s first black millionaire in 1881. Its beautiful grounds offer a wonderful respite from hectic city life and are also home to the Devon House Ice Cream parlour, consistently named as one of the best ice creams in the world.
Hike the Blue Mountains
Escape the heat and head to the Blue Mountains. Luxury villas in Jamaica abound in this spectacular locale, along with a range of stunning resorts, including the famed Strawberry Hill, frequented by VIPs and celebrities.
Hiking is a popular way to explore the lush dense tropical forests of the Blue Mountains and to take in the areas stunning flora and fauna. The Blue Mountain Peak Trail takes hikers up to Jamaica’s highest point – some 7,400-feet above sea level. On the trail, hikers will be rewarded with breath-taking views, as well as from the summit. It’s a good four-hour hike, so stout walking shoes and a decent level of fitness is required.
The Blue Mountains is also where some of the world’ best coffee is produced, thanks in part to the wonderful climate and rich soil. Many of the coffee estates offer guided tours, where you can see the entire bean-to-cup process, and, of course, enjoy a spectacular brew.
Discover Montego Bay, home of luxury villas in Jamaica
Montego Bay is a popular tourism hotspot in Jamaica, and for good reason too. Here you’ll find a wonderful range of land-based attractions and world-class service providers, including spectacular resorts and a number of Jamaica’s luxury villas.
Sun-soaked pristine white sandy beaches, historic plantations, tropical gardens, spectacular golf courses, nature reserves, equestrian centres, and ample sporting facilities can all be found in Montego Bay.
A 90-minute drive away a trip to Dunn’s River Falls is a popular day-time excursion for those visiting Montego Bay. The world-renowned Dunns River Falls is one of Jamaica’s most popular attractions and a must-visit destination. Here water tumbles down some 180-metres of smooth limestone terraces into the sea. Visitors can opt to climb the falls with a guided tour or simply wallow in the natural pools.
