A Slice of Americana at the Harriton Farmstead Fair in Philadelphia

Think of farm life and sooner or later visions of the quaint country fairs that are such an integral part of it come to mind. If you grew up outside of a major metro area, it’s likely you’ve got your own childhood memories of quilt contests, prize pigs, and medal-winning vegetables grown in backyards. As hard to imagine as it is, there are still some of these authentic rural fairs around. The annual Harriton Farmstead Fair in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania is one of the greatest.

Harriton House

Locals know what to expect, but tourists and visitors are always surprised at how much there is to experience at this genuine farmstead fair. It is held at the Harriton House, a historic Welch settlement constructed in 1704. In its earliest days, the property was named Byrn Mawr (translated to High Hill from Welch) by Rowland Ellis, a Welch homesteader, and spurred the name of the entire town. Tours of the home and grounds are available during the Harriton Farmstead Fair.

Crafts

It’s possible to find quilts, clothing, toys, yard ornaments, and absolutely anything handmade at this fair. Local citizens set up booths with all their handiwork. Woodcarvers, painters, and blacksmiths offer their wares as well. Explore booth after booth of amazing craftsmanship from local small businesses and fill your life with quality goods made by hand.

Many crafters and artisans also offer demonstrations on their craft and how they instill the detail in their work. Watch spinners spin their threads and take your chance to buy real handmade clothes straight off the spinning wheel.

Antiques

You can’t have a country fair without a few antiques. Many people come to this fair specifically for the wide range of antiques to view and purchase. The Harriton Attic Treasures Booth is also available to offer the best flea market finds on the Main Line. Find carnival glass and teacups from occupied Japan right alongside combines from the 1700s and attire worn by homesteaders. Seeing the real pieces of life from our past helps us get a greater understanding of it.

Music and Food

What would a country fair be without music and food of the region? There is plenty of both each year at this major county event. Bluegrass, country classics, and regional music of the times are the background sounds of this quaint fair. It’s best to come hungry because the smells of fair food filling the air are irresistible.
